Domestic violence levels in New Zealand would drop significantly, if recommendations from the Law Commission’s report on Curbing Alcohol Harm were accepted, according to Te Kupenga Whakaoti Mahi Patunga - the National Network of Stopping Violence Services (TKWMP – NNSVS).

Spokesperson Brian Gardner welcomes the recommendations in the Law Commission report released today, saying statistics show that alcohol was a factor in one third of all family violence incidents attended by Police.

“Whilst alcohol is not present in two thirds of domestic violence incidents, it increases the likelihood and seriousness of domestic violence.  It’s like throwing petrol onto a fire, so any steps to reduce alcohol consumption would make a significant impact.”

Mr Gardner also welcomes the recommendations to regulate and limit alcohol promotion and sponsorship.

“Alcohol advertising often sends the wrong messages to young men and women about what is cool and acceptable behaviour,” says Brian Gardner.
